Birds of the Galapagos and Machu Picchu Trip
August 2009
Sapphirewing, Great, female and male (right & inset) (Pterophanes cyanopterus) - 8 Aug 09 - at entrance and end of main path (male) feeders at Yanacocha Ecological Reserve northwest of Quito, Ecuador. The inset clearly shows how it got its last name. Its first name comes from its size. At 6 inches long is it the second largest hummingbird in the world; almost as long as a house sparrow.
