The 11 surviving Galápagos Tortoise subspecies come in two basic types. Those with a saddle-backed shell with a raised front edge like this one. It allows the neck and head to be extended upward to feed on low shrubs. The domed shell like Lonesome George and the one in the previous photo are found on subspecies that primarily feed on grasses and ground covers.
