September 16: Petrified redwood tree. Our winery visit wasn't until the afternoon, so we visited the Petrified Forest near Calistoga. Most of the trees are redwoods that were felled by massive volcanic eruption millions of years ago and buried ash. Growth rings are visible in the portion of a cross section in the inset.
